Dr. Jaydev Panchawagh is a neurosurgeon practicing in Pune, a Metropolitan City located to the south-east of Mumbai and 160 kilometers away.
He has been associated with the field of brain & spine surgery from his undergraduate days.Dr Panchawagh has been working in the department of Neurosugery from his internship days, at the age of 21 years.
During his general surgery training days he wrote a research paper on “ Efficacy and value of stereotactic computer guided neurosurgery” which was highly acclaimed.
He was a student of Prof. Sunil Pandya, who was then, Professor and head of neurosurgery at KEM Hospital Mumbai. During this period, he wrote two highly appreciated research papers on “Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy- Surgery by anterior v/s posterior approach” and “importance of the A1 perforators in the clipping of Acom cerebrovascular aneurysms.”
His research in the field of brain tumours. “The challenges in the surgery of Angioblastic Meningiomas “..... “ The dissection technique in the rapid resection of the C-P angle tumours”.... “
Mobilisation of the bridging veins in parasagittal meningiomas”.
“Intermittent trapping of the internal carotid artery in extremely vascular giant glomus jugulare tumours”........are only a few examples of his involvement in the field of brain tumour surgery.
After his Mch, Dr. Jaydev Panchwagh was trained at NIMHANS by Pro. K.V. R. Shastri. He also received training from Prof. Gaab of Germany.
He was trained in Neuronavigation techniques at Frankfurt, Germany by Prof. Seifert and Prof. Rabbe.
He has also spent time in learning various philosophies of spinal surgery from Prof. Michael Mayer at Munich. He was trained by Prof.
Anthony Young of USA in the field of endoscopic spinal surgery. For the last 12 years it has been his mission to take brain & spine surgery to the masses.
His teaching techniques for non neurological doctors are striking. He has written more than 500 articles to simplify the complex topics in neurosurgery for general public and general practitioners.
Presently, he is especially known for his work in the field of Microvascular Decompression for Hemifacial spasms, Glossopharyngeal neuralgia and trigeminal neuralgia ( 850 cases).
This work is one of the largest in India. Another field of focus has been complex brain tumours inclusive of giant pituitary tumours, C-P angle tumours, gliomas and meningiomas.
Dr. Jaydev Panchawagh was also the pioneer in endoscopic third ventriculostomy which he started in Pune for the first time in the year 2001.
Endoscopic brain surgery has rapidly progressed after that.
Spinal neurosurgery or ’Neurospinal surgery’ is the other half of his work and his work in spondylotic cervical and lumbar problems is monumental.
He has performed more than 5000 spinal surgeries with astounding 97% success rate.
While in KEM Mumbai, he carried out research on he cranio-vertebral fixation techniques and surgery for cervical spondylosis.
In the last two years he has concentrated on endoscopic lumbar spinal surgery. Also known as the postero- lateral endoscopy or stitchless spine surgery. He recently presented the results of 230 patients with excellent outcome in 96% patients.
Dr. Jaydev Panchawagh is a founding chairman of the “Synapse Brain & Spine Foundation”. This is an Indo-German effort with its counterpart “ Neurochirurgische Hilfe Indien” in the city of Aalen in south Germany.
Dedicated to Excellence in Neurosurgery, this foundation is active in research, public education and in increasing the level of Neurosurgery in Pune and surrounding towns.
Dr Panchawagh is regularly invited to Germany to present his work which greatly helps to collaborate with technologically superior German Neurosurgery.
