BRACHIAL PLEXUS DEFINED

The Department of Brachial Plexus surgery, DMH organised and hosted a Live Surgical Workshop and Clinical Update on 26-28th August, 2016. Experts from Beijing, China (Professor Shufeng Wang) and Barcelona, Spain (Dr Alejandro Musetlara) graced this meeting. The national faculty included prominent specialists in brachial plexus surgery from Vellore (Professor Binu Thomas), Hyderabad (Professor R. Srikant), Bangalore (Dr Ashok Koul), Nasik (Dr Rajendra Nehete), Surat (Dr Vitrag Shah) and Vadodara (Dr. Piyush Doshi).

 Primary nerve reconstruction procedures in post-traumatic (3 cases) and obstetrical (1 case) brachial plexus injuries were demonstrated on the first two days. In addition, there were 4 secondary operations for correction of deformities in birth palsies and one secondary procedure for a previously-operated post-traumatic palsy. The international faculty highlighted the current practices in such injuries during the operations and during presentations on the 28th August. The indications, techniques and expected outcomes were discussed in considerable detail by Drs Wang and Musetlara.
