Research Profile of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and  Research Centre (DMHRC)


                        Research activities are encouraged and many a consultants and staff members are actively participating in the research programmes, in DMH.


DMH has
  a special Department of Research Co- ordination.

  • The Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC=IRB), constituted as per National /International guidelines, meets on 3rd Thursday of every month. It can also function as an Independent Ethics Committee.

  • A Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meets every month prior to IEC meeting to scrutinize the research proposals from the point of view of scientific soundness and technical excellence and to recommend those for consideration of IEC. 

  • The guidelines for IEC & SAC (earlier called Institutional Ethical and Research Committee- IERC) dated 23/07/2003, are currently in  vouge. However, the work document of IEC and SAC including Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) is under preparation and is to be adopted as version 02 .

DMH is free to consider proposals submitted independently / directly by a Sponsor or the Sponsor’s approved CRO.


The research proposals are broadly classified into following categories:-

1. Clinical Drug Trials

2. Non- drug Clinical Trials

3. Biomedical / Psycho- Social / Socio-Economic Projects

4. Inter -disciplinary Projects

5. Product (Herbal) Development Project
6. Collaborative Research Projects with other Recognised institutions, in India or abroad.


For example:
Dr. Uday Devaskar,UCLA, USA, a renowned Neonatologist is deeply interested in establishing training and research activities with NICU and PICU of DMH.

Dr. Vasant Oswal, Middlesborough, U.K., a highly respected ENT Surgeon and Internationally renowned  Otolaryngologist, is collaborating in promotion of newer techniques in Laser surgery and encouraging research in the extremely well known “Voice Disorder Clinic”, and “Smt. Vimalabai Mutha National Institute of Laser Science” of DMH.

Dr Balasubramaniam , USA is encouraging training and research in EMS /Trauma.



The herbal product development project, undertaken by Dentistry Department of DMH in collaboration with Biotechnology Centre of Modern College, ShivajiNagar and Modern College of Pharmacy Nigdi, Pune is attempting to develop a product to effectively deal with common, yet major problems like dental caries and those of gums like gingivitis and periodontitis; thus aiming at improving oral care and oral hygiene. This unique project is being entirely funded by Gokhale family that has established “Principal V G Gokhale Centre for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine”. Short named as GC_CAM (gee-cee-cam) it is headed by Dr. Gokhale, a renowned statistician by profession, yet keenly interested in promoting basic and clinical research, especially in CAM using the techniques in Biomedical Sciences. Dr Gokhale hails from Pune, India, and resides most of the time # 13822 Margene Circle, Irvine, CA 92620, USA. His email ID is dvgeap@yahoo.com, and would welcome discussion leading to collaborative research in the field of medicine and health care with special reference to CAM.

Dr. Ashwini and Anil Nene, Shirley, Croydon, Surrey , UK have been regularly supporting and encouraging research in Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital . Nenes particularly feel that Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital must also undertake integrated research approach by incorporating the best of different systems of medicine. They feel it could be the most need-oriented contribution, if affordable remedies could be made available for common diseases and thereby contribute to better health care of the masses. 


                                                                     DMHRC is actively engaged in the following Research Collaborations:

                         Lupin Ltd. (Research Park), Pune, India , for Phase I trials.
                       National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, India, for Clinical Genetics.


In this multidisciplinary tertiary level DMH, over 60 research projects are being conducted by young, highly qualified, abroad-trained, experienced consultants and medical and paramedical men & women, social workers, clinical psychologists, counsellors and so on. The drug trials range in the areas of Oncology (over 25), Paediatrics, Cardiology, Urology, NICU, PICU, Neurology, the Device related unique project in Endoscopy. Other projects such as QOL studies in Pre / Post Angioplasty / Bypass, Geriatric Depression, Total Knee Replacement (TKR), Antenatal Care (ANC) and Breast cancer, to name some, are being carried out in collaboration with Jnana Prabodhini Medical Trust (JPMT), Pune.
