Course Rationale: The course aims at exposing the candidates to the practical training in relation to Renal Surgery via percutaneous or endoscopic approach. It provides hands on training on Endotrainers and assess the improvement in existing skills.

Target Audience: Post graduate trainees in Urosurgery and general surgery and young consultants in practice who want to doRenal Surgeries.

AIMS

  1. Teach basic principles of renal access with use of "c" arm
  2. Understand the renal anatomy and puncture techniques
  3. Orientation of equipments , video trolley
  4. Use and assembling lithotripsy equipment.

OUTCOMES

  1. Hand eye co-ordination on endotrainer
  2. Use of "c"arm to obtain accurate and most desirable calyx puncture
  3. Dialatation of renal Access tract
  4. Equipment assembly, care, trouble shooting
  5. Fundamentals of optics and Energy sources.
  6. Personal and patient safety.

LEARNING METHODS

Lectures – videos and lectures demonstrating anatomy, anaesthetic considertions,complications of percutaneous surgery, course material given on registration detailing important publications, point of technique and laser and radiation safety.

Demonstration :

Assembly of video trolley – problems created purposely and students made to solve them.

Needle puncture technique on model kidney using 1. Bull’s eye technique 2. Conventional technique

RIRS – Flexible endoscopes used to reach renal pelvis and calyces and stone manipulation technique demonstrated exercises.

EXERCISES:

  1. Exercises are aimed at improving accuracy of puncture and participants are made to use conventional technique with Bulls eye puncture using ’C’ arm .
  2. Two separate endotrainer models are used to demosntate the bending turning manovers of flexible scopes

ASSESSMENT METHODS

  1. Designed course questionnaire for both trainees and trainers filled daily.
  2. Verbal feed back from trainers and observers was noted.
  3. Feedbacks were discussed with trainers to improve future courses audio-visual presentations, video trolleys and quipments used for surgery – nephroscopes, minierk system, various dilators and puncturing equipments for demonstration.
